WHY DOES A CHARGE IN MOTION PRODUCE MAGNETIC FIELD?

A stationary charge produces an electric field around it and when the charge moves it produces a magnetic field. This is what we observe.

A magnetic field can be produced by

• A magnet
• A moving charge
• A current carrying conductor, coil, solenoid or toroid
• A time varying electric field

I have no answer to the WHY?

Special relativity requires that all observers in relative motion would be able to describe what they observe using the same laws of physics.

If a charge is in motion realative to one frame of reference, there will be another in which it is not moving at all (ie the one where we travel WITH the charge) and yet others in which the charge is moving at different speeds or directions.

And yet all of them observe the same outcome of any experiment involving the charge.

When you apply the Lorentz transformation to try to understand how it is possible for the same experiment to be explained both in the case of a moving and non-moving charge, you will see that there’s a translation between the electrostatic explanation and the electromagnetic one. Some observers see magnetism at work, others see static electricity at work.

When looked at this way, magnetism can be understood to be a relativistic effect of electrostatics.
