The thinkquest competition 2012 was held under three categories. The winners of the competition under each category is detailed below.

This team harnessed the full potential of the Internet to spread their message about food scarcity. They hope to inspire and encourage others to take part in ending starvation.

Vish-Amrit: Transform Poisoned Water Into Nectar
Water contamination is a great concern in New Delhi. This team explored a way to purify water and bring water conservation methods to their city.
3rd Place – 19 and Under
Make Garbage Enzyme Our Hero: Use Garbage Enzyme
This team demonstrates how to make a garbage enzyme, an inexpensive and eco-friendly way to turn kitchen waste in to fertilizer.

Our Living Roof
In Puerto Rico, high temperatures often make for uncomfortable classrooms. This team created an eco-friendly way to keep their classrooms cool: they planted a garden on the roof.
2nd Place – 16 and Under
Fear? Face It! Fight It!!
This project teaches children under the age of 13 to recognize fear as emotion and to work at overcoming common fears.
3rd Place – 16 and Under
Zeros to Heroes
This team wanted to raise student awareness about violence in Puerto Rico and provide solutions to help bring peace to their community.

Saving Energy
To help address the problem of excessive energy consumption in school, this team explained to their school’s management ways that everyone can pitch in to save energy and make a difference.
2nd Place – 12 and Under
Entrepreneurial Kids
This team created a project plan, performed a market survey, and wrote a business plan to experience what it is like to start and run a business. They then conducted a workshop to educate other students about what they learned.
3rd Place – 12 and Under
Father And Mother, I Lack Your Time (Family Time)
To help parents communicate with their children, this team created a survey and used the results along with expert interviews to create a public service website.

This team created a website to educate users about the existence of cyber threats and teach them how to stay safe from computer viruses.

Animus – Let Your Ideas Take Form
To help viewers perfect their presentation skills, this team developed a tablet and smartphone-friendly website that can be used to develop electronic presentation materials.
3rd Place – 19 and Under
Trash to Triumph
Much of the aluminum we use is wasted in landfills instead of being recycled. This team created a project to recycle aluminum and help clean up the world.

Nobody In, Everybody Out: Changing Tactics and Traditions of the Fire Service
Many firefighters have lost their lives due to structural collapse. This team created a website to train firefighters about advances in building materials and construction practices to help servicemen and women avoid accidents at the site of a fire.

From LOLcats to Laptops: Exploring Teen Tech Use
Today’s teenagers use more electronics than ever. This team created a website to help teens make informed decisions about the technologies they use every day.
3rd Place – 16 and Under
Concurrent Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Water and Hydrogen Production Using TiO2 Nanotubes
The shortage of clean water and clean energy is increasingly a global concern. This team investigated the feasibility and efficiency of TiO2 nanotubes as a way to remove heavy metals from water while simultaneously creating clean energy.

This team’s project introduces users to the endangered Bobwhite and helps them understand how to protect this bird from further population decline.

This team explored how hunger affects people and how nutrition and food safety can help people eat more healthily.

Buzzy Bees
This team created a project to educate other students about the threat of bee extinction and about the consequences to the human food chain if bees disappeared.

1st Place – 18 – 22
Luna
Teaching students with autism requires special consideration of each student’s individual skills and habits. This team created a platform that allows educators to create games that both meet student and teacher needs and provide statistical data and analysis.
2nd Place – 18 – 22
Frevol Friends
This team created a web and mobile application that harnesses social media technology and peer influence to connect volunteers with organizations and provide a convenient way for friends to encourage other friends to participate in charitable work together.
3rd Place – 18 – 22
EL-Green
Every year, approximately 10 billion tons of coal are consumed to generate energy. This team created Green Living, a household automation and energy management system, to reduce electricity consumption and minimize the energy wasted due to human negligence.

Trenders.org
Without adequate economics preparation in high school, young adults risk making poor financial decisions that can adversly impact their lifelong fiscal well being. This team developed an approach to teaching economics that made it an engaging and exciting subject for high school students.
2nd Place – 17 and Under
TED 2012 (Text Encryptor & Decryptor)
This team corrected an inherent weakness in a ubiquitous mobile technology: the lack of encryption in text messaging. The Text Encryptor & Decryptor 2012 sends and receives password protected text messages from mobile to mobile.
3rd Place – 17 and Under
switchCASE
To help protect data from hackers, this team developed an application that generates a random password for increased security. The application also can score password strength.
