Give me a place to stand and I can move the earth

Archimedes was quoted saying

“give me a place to stand and I can move the earth.”

To what was Archimedes referring?

Question received by email

He was referring to the principle of levers.

Archimedes Thoughtful

A lever is a rod, straight or curved free to turn about a fixed point called fulcrum. By adjusting the distance of the load and effort from the fulcrum, any load can be overcome by the given effort according toi thre principle,

Load x Load Arm = Effort x Effort Arm

Load arm is the distance between load and fulcrum; effort arm is the distance between effort and fulcrum
