## Numericals from Newton’s Laws of motion based on F=ma (For calss XI students of Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom)

Download the questions and solve them and submit on or before 9 Oct 2014

1. A force acts for 10 s on a body of mass 10 kg after which the force ceases and the body describes 50 m in the next 5 s. Find the magnitude of the force. [Ans: 10 N]
2. A  truck starts from rest and rolls down a hill with constant acceleration. It travels a distance od 400 m in 20s. Calculate the acceleration and the force acting on it if its mass is 7 metric tonnes. [Ans: 2 m/s2, 14000N]
3. A motor car running aat the rate of 7 m/s can be stopped by applying brakes in 10 m. Show that total resistance to the motion, when the brakes are on is one fourth of the weight of the car.
4. In an Xray machine, an electron is subjected top a force of 10-23 N. In how much time the electron will cover a distance of 0.1 m,? Take the mass of the electron = 10-30 kg

## Variation in acceleration due to gravity (g) with depth

As we go deeper from the earth suface the gravity starts decreasing but formulla is ‘F=G*m*M/r2 where distance between the object and the earth is r2 which is inversally proportional to the ‘g’ then why as we go deeper from the earth suface the gravity starts decreasing; it should be increased because distance between the earth and the object is less. but it start decreasing why?

When we go deeper into earth, the attraction at that point is due to a sphere of earth of radius (R – d) where d is the depth below the surface of earth.

Let a body of mass m be kept on the surface of earth. The force exerted by earth on it,

$F_{surface}=mg=\frac{GMm}{R^{2}}$ where M is the total mass of earth and R is the radius of earth.

But, $M&space;=&space;\frac{4\pi&space;R^{3}\rho&space;}{3}$

Substituting for M,

$mg&space;=&space;\frac{4\pi&space;G\rho&space;m&space;R}{3}$

## Angle between acceleration and velocity in projectile motion

What is the angle between the directions of  acceleration and velocity at the highest point of projectile?

At the highest point of a projectile, the vertical component of velocity is zero and the velocity is entirely horizontal. The direction of acceleration (due to gravity) is vertically downwards throughout the motion of the projectile.

Therefore, the angle between the direction of acceleration and velocity at the highest point of a projectile is 90 °

## Kinematics Problem

Three particles A,B,C are situated at vertices of a equilateral triangle ABC of side ‘a’ m at t=0 Each of the particle moves with constant speed ‘ v ‘. A always has it’s velocity along AB ,B always has it’s velocity along BC , C always has it’s velocity along CA. Derive the equation of trajectory of any one particle (means find y=f(x) i.e. relation between y and x coordinates of the particle). Also find the rate of rotation of the triangle formed by joining the lines connecting the three points as a function of time. If you think it requires more information such as acceleration etc., introduce them if needed.
