AISSCE 2016 Physics Question Paper feedback

How was the CBSE Physics exam?
When the question was asked to teachers and students the response was a mixed one.

Not as expected

Time was not enough
Question paper was lengthy
1 and 2 marks questions were easy
Five marks questions were confusing

Etc … were some of the reactions
How do you feel?
How was the paper?

Respond now. Your response counts. It will also help the teachers and Principal to take up the matter to CBSE authorities.

Feedback Received

Very Easy but Very Lengthy

“I appeared yesterday for the respective exam. It was quite surprising for us to see the very easy Physics Exam! I myself had prepared hard for it but the exam was much lengthy especially 3 marks questions. I myself couldn’t attempt 10 marks which i had already realized were quite easy questions. But I  have to accept this disappointment now” – Shubham Dhingra

YDSE (Young’s Double Slit Experiment)

In the question we have a simple YDSE setup , there’s just the addition of a glass slab of thickness t and ,refractive index u, in front of the top slit ( S1). Now we submerge the entire setup into water (given refractive index u1). We now have to find the locations of the points, which are the points of constructive interference( max intensity).

I considered 3 approaches, first-

I calculated the optical path difference in water = t(u/u1 -1)- yd/D. where y is the reference coordinate of the maxima( any general position) from the original central maxima, d is the slit separation , and D is the distance from screen. For constructive interference path difference = n*wavelength( in water). Now wavelength in water= “wavelength in air”/u1 Therefore we get our answer.

Approach two:

I found out the path difference in water and multiplied it by u1 , to get the path difference in air , and I got the same result when I equated this path difference to- n*wavelength(in air).

Approach three- I found the path difference in air – t(u-1)-yd/D and divided this by u1, to get path difference in water, and equated this to n* wavelength (water). This time around , I did not get the answer.

Can anyone explain the difference between the second and third approaches. And also please do tell me, if I have committed some error.

General instructions:

(i) All questions are compulsory.

(ii) There are 30 questions in total. Questions 1 to 8 carry one mark each, questions 9to18carry two marks each, questions 19to27carry three marks each and questions 28to30 carry five marks each.

(iii) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question of two marks, in one question of three marks and all three questions of five marks each. You have to attempt only one of the given choice in such questions

1. Name the fundamental force which is responsible for the stability of the nucleus. (1)

2. State the no. of significant figures in the following (more…)

What is pseudo force

What is pseudo force when it is applied ?

Asked Niharika Dinkar

Answer:

Pseudo force is also called fictitious force.

A fictitious force arises when a frame of reference is accelerating compared to a non-accelerating frame.

For example if you consider a person standing at a bus stop watching an accelerating car, he infers that a force is exerted on the car and it is accelerating. Here there is no problem and the pseudoforce concept is not required

But, if the person inside the accelerating car is looking at the person standing at the bus stop, he finds (more…)

Current Carriers and conduction

1. Do the protons flow when current flow?
2. In case of semiconductor do the holes flow?

Animesh asked

Answer:

Atom 3D Model

In metallic conductors, free electrons are the current carriers, i.e, it is due to the motion of the free electrons that conduction takes place in a metallic conductor. The protons do not move as they are inside the nucleus and bound by strong nuclear forces. It is the electrons of the outermost shell of the atom which are least bound to the atom, flow and cause conduction

In semiconductors the current carriers are free electrons and holes.

What are holes?

Holes are actually vacancies created when an electron is freed from a bond. It is assigned a positive charge. When a potential difference is applied across a semiconductor, the free electrons move towards the positive terminal as in the case of a metal. The bonded electrons also move towards positive terminal from vacancy to vacancy and this causes the holes  t move towards the negative terminal.
